Since 2011, GeorgiaCAN: The Georgia Campaign for Achievement Now, a locally-led education nonprofit, has worked to build a movement of parents, teachers and concerned citizens united in the goal of improving the quality of education in our state. GeorgiaCAN has an energetic, results-driven team working on state-level opportunities to increase educational opportunities and improve the educational outcomes of our 1.7 million public school students. About the job
GeorgiaCAN seeks a Deputy Director who will be responsible for helping to develop strategy, coordinate and communicate research and policy solutions, and advocate for policy improvements in Georgia’s educational system. The Deputy Director will work to enhance the internal organization and infrastructure necessary for GeorgiaCAN’s continued success and growth. Based in the metro-Atlanta region, this position reports directly to the Executive Director. The Deputy Director will lead fundraising activities and will partner closely with the executive and national teams to develop strategies, build relationships, meet organizational goals and advance our mission. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional multi-tasking abilities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be able to set an impactful vision for the role while executing aligned strategies for success.
Key responsibilities
- Leading team members to meet goals and deliver outstanding work; manage internal staff development to ensure that GeorgiaCAN is a great place to work and grow professionally.
- Partner with Team Growth to create and execute on annual development plans with multiple measures of success (new revenue, donor retention, portfolio diversification, etc.)
- Supporting GeorgiaCAN’s work in major functional areas: issue advocacy, communications and media and policy research.
- Identifying best practices and improving internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.
- Assist State Outreach Manager with planning and execution of external events to engage GeorgiaCAN members and key constituencies.
- Serve as a thought partner and bridge builder internally (with 50CAN network) and externally (with partners and stakeholders).
Qualifications
The ideal candidate has a strong commitment to education reform and GeorgiaCAN’s mission to make sure every Georgia child has access to a great public school. Additionally, they will demonstrate:
- At least three years in a management role.
- Previous fundraising experience, preferably on behalf of nonprofit entities.
- Excellent people skills, including past success supervising and mentoring staff and supporting professional and leadership development.
- When necessary, an ability to take initiative and make tough decisions.
- Past success designing and leading organizational development and capacity building An ability to implement vision, think strategically, creatively problem solve, exercise good judgment and lead change.
- Ability to effectively tailor messages and communications that engage members, teachers and the general public.
- Proficient with online and social media platforms.
- An aptitude for building relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Sense of humor, strong work ethic, creativity and willingness to do “whatever it takes” in a fast-paced work environment.
- Record of perseverance in the face of challenges, delivers against timelines, not intimidated by tasks/time limitations.
- Integrity (doing what’s right, even when it is uncomfortable) and transparency (candor and directness).
