Those who insist that we cannot solve America’s education problems without first solving poverty have it exactly backwards: we will never solve poverty until we guarantee a great education for all our children.

This belief inspires our work at 50CAN: The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now, a nonprofit advocacy organization that recruits and supports local leaders who build citizen movements in their states to ensure that every child has access to a great school. 50CAN is led by President & Founder Marc Porter Magee, and is built on the groundbreaking accomplishments of ConnCAN, where he spent six years as its chief operating officer. 50CAN operates campaigns in Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

As the Director of Leadership Development, you will help us bring the same kind of rigorous training to promising local advocacy leaders that organizations like KIPP and New Leaders have brought to promising school leaders. Working in collaboration with 50CAN’s senior leadership team, you will help develop a suite of innovative training programs including full-time and part-time fellowships, online classes, in-person workshops and internal professional development initiatives.

The position is based in Washington, DC and may require occasional travel to support the Senior VP of Growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the development of curriculum and program design for all of 50CAN’s internal and external leadership initiatives.
  • Supporting the SVP of States in the implementation of fellowships and trainings and the SVP of Campaigns in the implementation of courses and workshops.
  • Developing systems for knowledge capture and the dissemination of best practices across our state campaigns and national staff.
  • Instilling a culture of teaching and learning across the organization.
  • Managing and mentoring the 50CAN University manager.

Key Skills, Abilities and Experience

The ideal candidate will be absolutely dedicated to the idea that great schools change everything. Additionally, he or she will demonstrate:

  • Excellence in teaching at either the K-12 or college level.
  • Expertise in curriculum and course design.
  • Deep knowledge of effective approaches to adult learning including online learning.
  • A passion for education advocacy.
  • A knack for working independently, thinking creatively and taking initiative.
  • A sense of humor, strong work ethic, a “roll-up-my-sleeves” attitude and a willingness to do “whatever it takes” in a fast-paced, highly collaborative startup work environment.
