50CAN: The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now is a nonprofit advocacy organization that recruits and supports local leaders to build citizen movements in their states to ensure that every child has access to a great public school. 50CAN is led by President & Founder Marc Porter Magee and operates campaigns in Minnesota, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey and North Carolina.

As Development Communications Manager, you will use great writing to cultivate potential funders, engage existing funders and expand the reach of 50CAN’s network of advocates for great schools. Working on 50CAN’s Team Growth, you will oversee the production of grant applications, grant reports and related fundraising materials, including internal and external presentations. You will also produce content for speeches, blog posts, email marketing and other external relations projects.

The position is based in Washington, D.C., and reports to the Senior Vice President of Growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the organization’s lead writer for development projects including grant applications, grant reports and other grant-related materials to help ensure the financial sustainability of the organization.
  • Copy-edit written content produced by other staff members.
  • Lead development of annual and special fundraising campaigns (traditional and online) across the organization,
  • Instill a culture of top-notch storytelling across the organization, with an emphasis on capturing multimedia, powerful anecdotes and metrics from our state campaigns.
  • Ensure consistency of messaging in all materials.
  • Support the CEO in maintaining a frequent, effective and compelling drumbeat of contact with our national membership base.

Key Skills, Abilities and Experience

The ideal candidate will be absolutely dedicated to the idea that great schools change everything. Additionally, he or she will demonstrate:

  • Outstanding written communication skills, with at least four years of experience in a storytelling-based field such as journalism, marketing, public relations, development or publishing.
  • A passion for education advocacy.
  • A knack for working independently, thinking creatively and taking initiative.
  • A sense of humor, strong work ethic, a “roll-up-my-sleeves” attitude and a willingness to do “whatever it takes” in a fast-paced, highly collaborative startup work environment
  • Development experience is a plus.
  • Strong background in online fundraising a plus.
