50CAN: The 50-State Campaign for Achievement Now is a nonprofit organization that works at the local level to advocate for a high-quality education for all kids regardless of their address. We help develop local education leaders by providing them with the research, tools and ideas needed to create learning environments that best meet every child’s needs. We focus our work on starting earlier, expanding choices, aiming higher, rewarding talent and reaching everyone. 50CAN operates campaigns in Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island and is led by CEO & Founder Marc Porter Magee.
About the job
As part of 50CAN’s national campaigns team, the communications and research associate will help produce both communications and research materials for 50CAN’s state campaigns. This position reports to the Vice President of Campaigns.
Job responsibilities:
- Communications: Support state teams by editing and drafting press releases, website content, blog posts and emails; laying out and sending regular emails to supporters; developing and distributing content through social media channels; and implementing press outreach and media relations strategies.
- Research: Support state teams by collecting and analyzing data for research reports and fact checking 50CAN research products.
- Strategy: Translate policy goals into actionable communications strategies and products.
About you:
- A bachelor’s degree and impressive academic record.
- 1-2 years of relevant work experience in research, media or communications.
- Love of social media, online platforms and communities.
- Superb research abilities and instincts: able to quickly gather and analyze both quantitative and qualitative education-related information from various sources with strong attention to detail.
- Great writer with a concise, accessible and pithy style.
- High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. Adobe InDesign/Photoshop experience is a plus.
- Strong problem solver with a willingness to learn and take the initiative.
- Commitment to 50CAN’s mission.
- Sense of humor, strong work ethic, “roll-up-my-sleeves” attitude and willingness to do “whatever it takes.”
